Forwarded from the District Office hence the Birmingham bias, but is helpful in shaping our response to the Olympics.
Hello,
Thank for you signing up as the Gold Champion for your church!
My name is Steve Bownds and I am More Than Gold’s regional champion for the West Midlands.
There are now only 41 Sundays left until the Olympics is upon us!
This email is being sent to encourage you that there are lots of ways, both big and small, sporty and non-sporty, for churches to maximise the Olympics for the glory of God!
For example, if your congregation or local community includes people from other countries, then why not hold an event themed around that particular nation. With almost every nation on earth participating in the Olympics there’s enormous scope to reach out to people from foreign lands, some of whom may not have heard the Gospel before.
The BBC will have over 20 channels allowing all (as in, every single minute) of the Olympics to be shown live. Churches, and other groups, are permitted to freely show the Olympics to anyone. All it takes is a couple of TVs, and maybe some food, and there’s an event. If there are local sports clubs near you then it’s a great opportunity to engage with them by offering your building to show sports which at previous Olympics (where the coverage was a lot less) were not easy to watch. Also, with the Jamaicans set to dominate the sprint events, China the badminton, table tennis and gymnastics, and other nations excelling in specific sports, there’s an opportunity to reach out to local communities by offering to show their country’s dominant sports on a TV or 2.
Some of you will already be aware that the West Midlands Police force is hugely keen to engage with the Olympics. The specially-made flyer attached, demonstrates how keen they are to get involved with local churches. I would hugely encourage you to contact the Local Policing Department so that they can get on board with what your church is doing in your area. Also, I am meeting the Police later this week to discuss what churches in the West Midlands are doing for the Olympics and it would be amazing to be able to tell them of any initiatives that are in the pipeline, so please do let me know so that I can apss it on. They, and I, would be hugely encouraged.
Lastly, (for this email at least) Birmingham City Council have created a website where any Olympic-inspired event can be registered, whether the event be big or small, sporty or non-sporty. You can find it, and it is easy to use at: http://www.birminghamourgames.co.uk/. The man who set it up is a Christian and is very keen for churches to make the most of this resource.
I know that this email has contained a lot of info but hope it will encourage you that there is a way for your church to show others something of the glory of God through Olympic outreach!
If you have any questions then please do let me know by replying to this email or on 07803 888 258.
God bless,
Steve

As you may remember Three in One Productions is the team behind the ‘Parables’ project a couple of years ago. We’ve not been idle since, having had an input to the District Vision Day as well as other things (including a 30 minute Pantomime in a Garden Centre!) We now feel the time is right to offer two new shows along similar themes particularly suitable for the seasons of Lent and Passiontide.
New Beginnings features Mary, the mother of Christ, reflecting on her son’s birth, life, ministry and death. A World Without follows Peter’s roller coaster ride of emotions from agony to amazement as he lives through that first Easter weekend.
Both shows last about an hour and a half. They are ideally suited for helping a church to focus on the events of the Passion as well as providing an excellent opportunity to introduce these stories in a new dramatic and stimulating manner.
They are both performed by young professional actors.
Emma Bates has performed in a wide range of plays from ‘Alice in Wonderland’ to ‘Cat and Mouse’, a play about the holocaust. She is currently a resident actress/singer at the Coombe Abbey Country Park Hotel where she performs in Medieval Banquets, Murder Mysteries and many other shows.
Stuart Horobin’s roles range from Bottom and Caliban in Shakespeare’s plays through to a cricket, fox and a dolphin in ‘The Adventures of Pinocchio’. Both were members of the successful ‘Parables’ company.
Both shows have been written by Roger Price who has been creating accessible dramatic material on the Christian theme for many years. As well as full length shows like ‘Parables’ and ‘Minstrel’s Song’ he has also written pieces suitable for worship and other situations. Most of his work can be accessed through the ‘Twelve Baskets’ website.
Three in One Productions is committed to sharing their shows with anyone who would like to have them. They make no set charge for their productions, inviting their hosts to make a donation of what they can afford towards their expenses. As a guide each of these shows will cost the company about £200 per performance to present.
If you would any further information or would be interested in having either - or both - of these shows at your church please contact:
